Introducing the Grace Beat Quartet!
The Grace Beat Quartet, a collaborative project by Gugak Jazz Society, unites four talented musicians from the US and Korea to create a unique musical experience. Mina Cho on piano, Insoo Kim on Korean percussion, Yeongjin Kim on drums, and Max Ridley on bass create a harmonious blend of infectious rhythms and captivating melodies. Drawing inspiration from the concept of grace notes in music, which emphasize individual and cultural stylization, the quartet explores a diverse range of jazz-infused sounds from around the world. In the program, the members of the Grace Beat Quartet will present their new music as well as selections from the Gugak Jazz Society's GreeKorea album. This showcases the seamless interplay of their musical journeys in the US, Korea, and Greece, even amidst the challenges of the pandemic. Collaborating with long-time friends George Lernis (Middle Eastern percussion) and Burcu Gulec (vocals) from Anatoliama, this Boston and Korea-based ensemble delivers a performance that celebrates the transformative power of music, the richness of cultural exchange, and the inherent grace in their musical expression. I feel truly grateful to be able to share with you the very final result of the GreeKorea project. Here is the documentary, which is our story. Hope this resonates with your hearts in a very special way.
"Everyone’s story resembles another’s, and it is our hope that this music can inspire you to think about how to live together even when we face conflicts and differences. ... Life is improvisational, replete with unanticipated and astonishing events. We improvise to find creative solutions in the moment. We keep trying."
